I finally blurted out, as we were on I-495, âHeâs got some power.â
She knew who I was talking about. âHe said he was touched by an angel when he was a boy.â
âAngels.â I snorted. âMore like fallen angels, if you ask me.â
âHow do you know?â
âBecause angels donât concern themselves with men unless God tells them to.â I watched the scenery pass by. âAnd God doesnât care.â
âOh, Mikey, God cares.â
âGod didnât summon that demon, I did.â I thumped my chest. âMe. If God didnât want that demon to come into existence, he wouldnât have let me summon it. Besides, while I was in that holy prison, there were plenty of chances for God to come along and tell me how saved I could be.â
âDonât be angry at God.â
âIâm not angry at God. I just donât need him.â
Becky sighed. âYou know, my old self would argue with you. But some days, I think youâre right. That God has left us all to take care of ourselves. Preachers are there keep us in line. But after itâs all said and done, God isnât going to care if I worked on His Sabbath day or not.â
âBecause youâre living a good life, Becky. A human life.â
She glanced at me and smiled, then turned back to the road. âYou are too, Mike.â
âIâm trying like hell.â
We got back to her place, with just enough time for her to change into her work clothes and run back out the door. âI should be home around 9:30 and then Iâll take you home,â she said.
I surveyed the living room after she left. It really wasnât that bad, once you moved the large items back to their respective places. The TV cable had been yanked out of the back of it, but otherwise it was fine. I picked up the snowglobe. It said âMontreal, Quebecâ on it.
I remembered for a minute when we went to Montreal. I must have been very young, 8 or 9. I remember it being boring, going in and out of shops, driving around the city, looking at uninteresting buildings. My mother went into a fancy boutique, and the lady there fussed all over me. I remember Phil being rambunctious, hiding among the racks of clothes. My father ending up taking us kids outside for ice cream.
Phil. I wondered what heâd be doing right now if I hadnât killed him. Well, I hadnât killed him; Belial had. Under my orders, but I really didnât kill him, did I? Just like the seven other people.
I had five years to think on that, and decided that yes, I had killed them all. Maybe the Rosicrucians knew and set me free because they figured I felt remorse. But oftentimes, I didnât. I was glad Phil was gone, because I always felt he was in my way. Even now, with my father, his specter was in the way.
I placed the snowglobe on the entertainment center, above the TV. Just as I did, the phone rang.
She must have had an answering machine, I thought.
